What is a TB test and who needs it?

At Lifeline Primary Care, we are committed to protecting your health and the health of our community. One important service we offer is tuberculosis (TB) testing. TB is a contagious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and early detection is essential for prevention and effective treatment.

Who Should Get Tested?

At Lifeline Primary Care, we recommend TB testing for individuals at higher risk, including:

• Those who have had close contact with someone with active TB
• Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those living with HIV/AIDS, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease
• Patients taking medications that suppress the immune system
• Healthcare workers and people who live or work in group settings (hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, shelters)
• People from countries where TB is common, or those who have recently traveled to these regions

Testing for TB helps us identify both latent TB infection (when the bacteria are present but inactive) and active TB disease (when the bacteria are causing illness). Detecting TB early allows us to provide the right follow-up care, whether that means monitoring, additional testing, or starting treatment to prevent the spread of TB.

How often do you need a TB test?

The frequency of tuberculosis (TB) testing depends on your personal risk factors, occupation, and current health guidelines in our community.

For most patients who are not at increased risk and do not work in healthcare or group settings, routine TB testing is typically not necessary after an initial negative test. However, if you work in healthcare, correctional facilities, homeless shelters, or other environments with higher TB exposure risk, you may need annual screening or testing according to your workplace policies.

You may also need more frequent TB testing if you have had close contact with someone diagnosed with active TB, have a weakened immune system, or have recently traveled to areas where TB is more common. Our providers at Lifeline Primary Care can help you determine the right testing schedule based on your medical history and risk factors.

If you have previously tested positive for TB, retesting is usually not required. Instead, we recommend regular follow-ups with your Lifeline Primary Care provider for evaluation and any necessary treatment options.

How does a tuberculosis test work?

At Lifeline Primary Care, we are committed to your health and the health of our community. Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Early detection through proper testing is crucial in preventing the spread and complications of TB.

Our TB Testing Services

We offer two main types of TB tests at Lifeline Primary Care:

Tuberculin Skin Test (TST/Mantoux Test):
In this test, our healthcare provider will inject a small amount of purified protein derivative (PPD) just under the skin of your forearm. You’ll be asked to return to our clinic in 48 to 72 hours so we can check the injection site for any reaction. A raised, hard area may indicate TB infection. Our knowledgeable providers will interpret your results based on the size of the reaction and your individual risk factors.

Blood Tests (Interferon-Gamma Release Assays, or IGRAs):
We also offer blood-based TB tests, such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold and T-SPOT.TB tests. These tests measure your immune system’s response to TB bacteria. If your blood sample shows a strong response, it may indicate TB infection.

A positive TB test does not always mean you have active tuberculosis. If your test is positive, our team will guide you through further evaluation, such as a chest X-ray or sputum analysis, to determine whether you have active TB disease or a latent (inactive) infection.

Protect yourself and those around you. If you need a TB test for work, school, travel, or due to possible exposure, contact Lifeline Primary Care today to schedule your appointment. Together, we can help control the spread of tuberculosis in our community.

What are the side effects of a tuberculosis test?

TB tests are generally safe, but mild side effects can occasionally occur. After a skin test, you may notice slight redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site on your forearm. These reactions are usually mild and resolve on their own within a few days. Rarely, the area may become itchy, bruised, or develop a small blister.

Allergic reactions are uncommon, but if you experience more pronounced swelling, pain, or even ulceration at the injection site, please contact Lifeline Primary Care right away. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare, but our team is always here to support you.

For the TB blood test, side effects are generally limited to those associated with any routine blood draw—such as mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the site. Occasionally, some people may feel lightheaded or faint during or after the procedure. More serious complications are very uncommon.

If you notice significant skin reactions, spreading redness, fever, or any signs of infection at the test site, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Lifeline Primary Care. Our providers are committed to your well-being and are available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

In most cases, TB testing is well tolerated and does not cause significant problems. We are here to ensure your experience at Lifeline Primary Care is as safe and comfortable as possible.
