A Comprehensive Guide to Your Echocardiogram with Dr. Aziz Pirani, MD and Dr. Safia Pirani, MD at Lifeline Primary Care
At Lifeline Primary Care, a standard echocardiogram appointment typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes from start to finish. When you arrive at our office, our friendly staff will assist you with check-in and any necessary paperwork. The actual echocardiogram procedure usually lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.
During the exam, one of our skilled technicians or sonographers will apply a special gel to your chest and use a handheld device called a transducer to capture detailed images of your heart. After the imaging is complete, you may be asked to wait briefly while our team ensures that all necessary images have been obtained.
Before you leave, you may have a brief conversation with your provider about the next steps or when to expect your results. Overall, you should plan to spend about an hour at our clinic for a standard echocardiogram, though the exact time may vary depending on your unique needs.
For most standard echocardiograms, no special preparation is needed. This noninvasive ultrasound test uses sound waves to create images of your heart while you rest comfortably on an exam table. In most cases, you can eat, drink, and take your regular medications as usual unless your provider advises otherwise.
However, some specialized echocardiograms—such as a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) or a stress echocardiogram—may require specific preparation:
• Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE): You may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before your appointment, as a probe will be gently passed down your throat to capture clearer images of your heart.
• Stress Echocardiogram: Your provider may recommend wearing comfortable clothing and may give you special instructions about medications or eating before the test.
Always follow the instructions given by your provider, as preparation can vary based on the type of echocardiogram and your individual health needs.
When you arrive for your echocardiogram appointment at Lifeline Primary Care, our caring staff will guide you through the process. You’ll be asked to change into a gown and relax on a comfortable examination table, often lying on your left side to help us get the clearest images of your heart.
A skilled sonographer from our team will apply a small amount of gel to your chest. This gel helps the ultrasound transducer—a handheld device—to send and receive sound waves more effectively. By gently moving the transducer across different areas of your chest, the sonographer captures real-time pictures and videos of your heart, which are immediately visible on our monitor.
During the procedure, you might be asked to adjust your breathing or hold your breath for a few seconds. This allows us to get the best possible images for accurate assessment. We may also use a special Doppler technique to observe the flow of blood through your heart’s chambers and valves.
Once all the necessary images are collected, the sonographer will clean off the gel and you can get dressed. The entire appointment usually lasts between 30 to 60 minutes.
After Your Echocardiogram
A board-certified cardiologist will carefully review your echocardiogram results. At Lifeline Primary Care, we are committed to clear communication, so we’ll discuss your results with you at a follow-up visit or send them promptly to your referring provider. This ensures you get timely feedback and the best recommendations for your ongoing heart health.
The timeframe for discussing your results with your Lifeline Primary Care provider can vary depending on several factors, including the type of test performed, how quickly the laboratory processes the results, and the urgency of your health condition.
Some tests—such as basic blood tests or rapid diagnostic screenings—may provide results within minutes or a few hours. In these cases, your provider may be able to discuss the findings with you during your visit or later the same day. Other tests, including cultures, specialized blood panels, or imaging studies (like X-rays or ultrasounds), can take several days to process.
If your results are urgent or indicate something abnormal, a member of our team will reach out to you as soon as the results are available. For routine or non-urgent results, you may be contacted at your follow-up appointment, by phone, or through our secure patient portal.
